As the international vaccination rate rises, more countries are getting herd immunity. Some have eased travel restrictions, hoping for tourism and business travel to revive the economy. But the question still stands- when is the best time to travel, both for your health and your wallet?

Best Time of the Year- “Shoulder Season”

As the demand for travel rises, so will the price, so the best prices are available when avoiding the season of high demand. To avoid both high season prices and low season weather, companies or individuals should consider “shoulder season.” Shoulder season is the time of the year between high and low seasons, where the price isn’t at its peak and the weather isn’t bad. For example, the shoulder seasons in New York are in the spring and autumn months. You can expect special discounts on flights and accommodation from April to May and September to October. The weather is comfortable, and the famous tourist attractions will have shorter queues. What’s not to love?

The Best Prices: Booking or Traveling in the Middle of Week?

There’s a rumor that it’s cheaper to book flights on a Tuesday than any other day of the week. However, according to a Skyscanner report, ticket prices only fluctuate, on average, about 4 dollars across all days of the week. More importantly, the day of the week that people travel on affects the price more than the day of the week they book the trip. For U.S. domestic flights in particular, flights on Tuesday and Wednesday are cheaper because the demand for business travel is higher at the beginning and end of the week.

The time of day also affects flight ticket prices: catching the red eye will always be less than the flight option in the middle of the day.

COVID-19: Where is it safe to travel?

As of July, many travel destinations are expected to return to normal. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo even went so far as to say that “we can now return to life as we know it.” Similarly, in California, Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions by visiting Universal Studios, calling it a “full reopening” of the Golden State’s economy. Most states will no longer enforce state rules on physical distancing and capacity limits at restaurants or bars.

Dr. Anne Rimoin, professor of epidemiology at UCLA, said “ there is a real chance of a summer with much lower rates of disease. However, it means we all have to pull together and do our part” by getting vaccinated, wearing masks, social distancing, and practicing hand hygiene.
